Delectable baked French croque-monsieur sandwiches layered with savory ham, mustard, homemade creamy béchamel sauce, and melted cheese.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Prepare the béchamel by melting the butter in a heavy-bottomed saucepan, sprinkling with flour, salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg once it foams, and whisking in the milk little by little until the sauce thickens.
  2. Preheat the oven to 180°C and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil.
  3. Lay out 6 slices of bread, spread with a little mustard, layer with béchamel, a slice of folded ham, grated cheese, another layer of béchamel, and top with the remaining 6 slices of bread, finishing with a thin layer of béchamel and remaining grated cheese.
  4. Arrange the sandwiches on the baking sheet and bake in the oven for about 10 minutes, placing them under the broiler for 3 to 4 minutes at the end for a golden crust.
