A classic homemade apple pie featuring sliced Golden Delicious apples tossed with cinnamon, nutmeg, and brown sugar, simmered into a rich filling, and baked inside a flaky, buttery double crust until golden brown.

Ingredients

Directions

  1. Peel and slice the apples into 1-2 inch strips.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the sliced apples, lemon juice, white sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cornstarch, then let sit for 15 minutes to release natural juices.
  3. Transfer the apple mixture and liquid to a saucepan and simmer over medium-low heat for about 15 minutes, stirring regularly to reduce the liquid, then remove from heat.
  4. To prepare the crust, combine the flour, salt, white sugar, and cold butter pieces in a food processor.
  5. Pulse for 5 to 10 seconds until the mixture resembles coarse sand, then slowly add ice water until the dough begins to clump together and holds when pinched.
  6. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  7. Divide the dough in half and roll both portions out on a lightly floured surface to fit a 9-inch pie pan.
  8. Line the bottom of the pie pan with one crust round and trim off any excess dough.
  9. Pour the cooked apple filling into the crust and spread evenly.
  10. Place the second dough round over the filling, fold and tuck the excess crust around the edges, and pinch the top and bottom crusts together to seal.
  11. Brush with optional egg wash for a glossy golden finish, and cut a few ventilation slits in the top crust.
  12. Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
